  • Mason Greenwood's transfer to Getafe on deadline day came as a surprise
  • The Manchester United star moved to Spain on a loan deal for the rest of the season
  • He might, however, be returned to England in January after Getafe inserted a clause in the deal

Mason Greenwood is currently familiarising himself with his new surroundings in Spain after he joined La Liga side Getafe on deadline day.

From his perspective, it will be an opportunity to kickstart his career, having last kicked a ball competitively in January 2022.

Greenwood was accused of causing bodily harm, sexual assault and coercive behaviour. He was subsequently arrested and arraigned in court, with Manchester United suspending him indefinitely. His case was dropped on February 2 this year.

United resisted the temptation of reintegrating him into the squad immediately and instead undertook an internal investigation of their own that lasted over 6 months. The club's CEO, Richard Arnold, disclosed late last month that the 21-year-old will not play for the club again in a lengthy open message to the club's fans.

The striker's contract, which runs until 2025, was, however, not terminated, with the club promising to help him restart his career away from Old Trafford. That help came in the form of securing a loan move to Getafe.

The deal will see the England international spend the season in Spain, with United covering a huge chunk of his 75,000 euros weekly wages. Getafe were also not compelled to pay a loan fee.

However, as the Athletic reports, the teenager could find himself back in Manchester in January should the loan deal not pan out as expected. Getafe have included a 'break clause' in the deal, which in essence means it can be called off if one of the parties is not happy. The clause is standard practice for many loan deals in football.

How fans reacted to Greenwood's return

Sports Brief also reported on fans having mixed reactions to Greenwood's return after Man United released a statement claiming he would continue his career away at Old Trafford.

Some lines of the presser did not sit well with fans, who believe non-conviction does not mean 'not guilty' and called out the club for insinuating that the striker had committed no offence.
