Should Gaston Sirino be called up for the Bafana Bafana squad?
The Uruguayan is officially eligible to play for the country and has expressed his interest in representing South Africa before.
As noted by iDiski Times, Sirino has now received his South African ID, making him eligible to be called up by Hugo Broos.
Despite being born in Uruguay, Sirino became eligible after fulfilling FIFA’s criteria.
FIFA’s regulations state that a player can represent another country if they have lived in the country for five years after the age of 18, Forbes noted.
Sirino stated that he would love to represent the country, speaking highly of it, Goal reported.
"I have had a great time in this beautiful country. I love everything about it and if I get presented with the chance to don the national team colours, I would jump at the opportunity, but the decision does not rest with me," he said at the time.
Broos has already named his squad for Bafana’s friendlies against Namibia and DR Congo but will have to select a team for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
However, Sirino’s age could be a big determining factor, as the Sundowns man is 32 already. Broos has been focused on bringing in more talented youngsters into the fold.
He also hasn’t played any games for Sundowns this season and, therefore, is short of game time.
