  • The decision comes after United opted against reintegrating Greenwood back into the first-team

Mason Greenwood has broken his silence, speaking publicly for the first time since finalizing his transfer to the Spanish La Liga side Getafe on the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old completed a season-long loan transfer from Manchester United to the Madrid-based club, marking his return to competitive football after nearly two years away from the game.

His competitive football hiatus commenced early in 2022 stemming from an arrest during which he faced suspicion of several offences, including attempted sexual assault, per Utd District.

Subsequently, Man United suspended the England international. However, in February, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence.

Despite this development, the club chose not to reintegrate him into the first-team squad, leading to his journey to Spain.

It's worth noting that Getafe will not be paying a transfer fee for Mason but will contribute a portion of his wages during the loan period.

Following his temporary move to Spain, Greenwood conveyed a message to the club's supporters through a video posted on their Twitter account. In the video, the forward stated:

"Hi, Getafe fans, it's Mason here. I'm so happy to be here, and I can't wait to get started," before showing a thumbs up to the camera.

With a grin on his face, he proudly displayed the team's home jersey and stood beside an oversized rendition of their club emblem.

According to talkSPORT, Greenwood will wear the No.12 shirt at his new club, having worn No.11 at United.

Calls for Getafe to sack Greenwood swirls

Meanwhile, a Spanish charity dedicated to combatting domestic abuse has appealed to Getafe to reconsider their decision to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.

Less than a week after securing Greenwood's signature, the Spanish club is facing significant scrutiny, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

According to the publication, the Ana Bella Foundation, a domestic abuse charity in Spain, has formally urged the club to reevaluate its choice to bring in the former Manchester United player.

Greenwood joins Getafe on loan

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Mason Greenwood received a last-gasp opportunity to restart his career after Getafe moved in for him on deadline day.

With time running out, it looked like the Manchester United player would have to contend with more months on the sidelines. Last month, the club had mutually agreed with him that he would no longer play for them again.
