  • Manchester United's defensive woes deepened after two players came off against Arsenal
  • Erik ten Hag was forced to call on ex-captain Harry Maguire to the delight of Gunners fans
  • A dramatic end saw Mikel Arteta's side put two late goals past United's makeshift defence

Arsenal fans showed their witty side as they cheered on Harry Maguire's substitution during their Premier League clash against Manchester United on September 3.

The two Premier League giants delivered a closely-contested box-office show for the better part of the contest before the Gunners ran away with the three points in stoppage time.

Marcus Rashford had put the visitors in front with a beautiful solo finish, but Martin Odegaard restored parity two minutes later.

Alejandro Garnacho thought he had won it for the Red Devils in the 88th minute, only for his strike to be ruled out by the VAR for offside.

Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus then scored two goals in extra time to hand Manchester United another defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

Erik ten Hag's side were hard done by with a couple of refereeing decisions, with injuries also playing a part.

Lisandro Martinez was taken off in the 67th minute, with Maguire taking his place, much to the delight of the home fans.

A video doing rounds on social media shows the fans cheering on the former United captain sarcastically as he makes his way up the pitch.

The England international has not had the best of times under ten Hag. His appearance against Arsenal was his first for the Red Devils this season.

Manchester United's defensive crisis

United's problems were compounded in the 84th minute after Victor Lindelof hobbled off as well, paving the way for Jonny Evans to make his second competitive debut for the club, as captured on the club's website.

With Raphael Varane out injured, ten Hag will be sweating on the fitness of Lindelof and Martinez; otherwise, United fans will be condemned to a centre-back pairing of Evans and Maguire for a few games.

Luke Shaw, who has at times filled in central defence, is also out for a lengthy period, forcing the club to move in for Sergio Reguilon.

How offside lines work on VAR

Manchester United players and fans were left aggrieved after Alejandro Garnacho's late goal against Arsenal on September 3 was chalked off for offside.

From the naked eye, re-instated Gabriel Magalhaes appeared to play Garnacho onside as Casemiro threaded the pass through. But after the blue and black lines were drawn, United fans were handed the dreaded red line.

So, how exactly does this technology work? Sports Brief delved into the Hawk-eye offside technology in VAR that was used on a weekend in which there were contentious decisions.
