FootballMason Greenwood: When Manchester United Star Could Make His Getafe Debut After Joining on Loan
- Mason Greenwood sealed a loan move to Spanish club Getafe to restart his career
- He has not played in almost two years after he was arrested and charged for assault and threat
- The loan move is to help him silently reignite his career away from the spotlight at Old Trafford
Mason Greenwood's path to reigniting his career away from Manchester United after the incidents of the past months is set to come at Spanish La Liga side Getafe.
The young English forward had all charges of assault and threat to life against him dropped in February after more than a year under investigation by the Crown Prosecutor.
He last played for United in January 2022 against West Ham before he was arrested and charged. The club conducted its internal investigation and were open to reintegrating him back into the team, but fan backlash stopped it.
When will Greenwood make Getafe debut?
Clubs from Turkey and Italy were interested in signing the 21-year-old forward, but the Spanish side won the race to sign him on a season-long loan.
His fitness would be questionable since he hasn't had a competitive game in months, so his debut is expected to come later, not in the 2-1 loss to Real Madrid yesterday.
As reported by Sun Sport, his debut will come after the international break, as he is slated to play against Osasuna on September 17.
What did Getafe manager say about Greenwood?
The club came under fire for the player's loan signing, which many believe no club should take, but head coach Jorge Bordalas has defended their decision.
“It is a very delicate situation to trivialise this issue. Everyone knows what happened and the appropriate measures were taken, obviously, we can only talk about football,” he said via Daily Star.

Football“Regarding the other issues, I believe that the people and the relevant authorities did what they had to do and everyone knows how it ended with a non-conviction sentence therefore he is a free person.”
“He is a footballer of a very high level and who arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm, and that we are obviously going to help him so that he recovers back to his best level,” he added.
United will reportedly cover over 50% of his £75,000 per week salary while away in Spain.
How did fans react to Greenwood's return?
Sports Brief reported that fans had mixed reactions to Greenwood's return after Manchester United released a statement claiming he would continue his career away at Old Trafford.
Some lines in the statement did not sit well with fans who believed that non-conviction doesn't mean not guilty and with the club categorically stating he did not commit the offence despite public evidence.
