  • Lazio have pointed an accusing finger at Manchester United over the botched loan transfer of Mason Greenwood
  • Greenwood was announced as a Getafe player on deadline day after sealing a loan move to the La Liga club
  • Lazio now claim Manchester United did not file paperwork on time, hence the failed move

Italian giants Lazio, through the club’s president Claudio Lotito, have sensationally blamed Manchester United for their failure to acquire talented striker Mason Greenwood.

United were in a race against time to sent Greenwood out on loan on transfer deadline day, and at some point, it looked like the 21-year old would move to Lazio.

But, in a classic deadline day twist, Greenwood ended up sealing a move to La Liga side Getafe instead, and is set to play for the Spanish club for the 2023/24 season.

Lotito has now come out to shed some light on what happened in the botched transfer, as he claimed United are to blame since the club failed to submit paperwork before the 7pm cutoff time in Italy.

The Lazio club boss further insisted that Greenwood was keener on joining Lazio, but it all boiled down to United’s failure to submit documents before the transfer deadline.

"I tried until the last minute. They didn’t countersign in time. He wanted to come to Lazio,” he said as quoted on GOAL.com.

He was then asked whether the club would once again try to sign Greenwood in the winter, to which he replied, “We’ll see”.

Greenwood, 21, was suspended by Manchester United last season after his arrest over abuse in January 2022.

Charges were ultimately dropped in February 2023, but United opted againstc continuing with the striker after “internal investigations”.

“Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.” United said in a statement in August.
"That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes, which he is taking responsibility for."

Getafe fans celebrate Greenwood loan deal

Sports Brief also reported on how Getafe fans reacted to the club’s signing of Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood joined the La Liga side on a season-long loan, weeks after United decided against continuing with the striker following “internal investigations” on assault allegations.

As soon as the loan deal was official, the fans broke into celebration, with Getafe sharing the video on the club’s official Twitter account.
