- Getafe fans were jubilant after the club signed Mason Greenwood from Manchester United on transfer deadline day
- Greenwood, 21, has not played competitive football since 2021
- The Spanish club announced the loan signing using a video of fans celebrating
A group of Getafe fans gathered outside the club’s stadium to celebrate the acquisition of Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United.
Greenwood joined the La Liga side on a season-long loan, weeks after United decided against continuing with the striker following “internal investigations” on assault allegations.
It initially looked like Lazio would sign Greenwood on transfer deadline day, but the transfer fell through at the last minute.
From then, Getafe fans had their hopes up as they gathered at the club's Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium in anticipation of an official announcement.
As reported by SportBible, as soon as the loan deal was official, the fans broke into celebration, with Getafe sharing the video on the club’s official Twitter account.
Manchester United urgently needed to offload Greenwood to avoid a case of buying off his contract, which still as two years left.
It is understood Getafe will not be paying a fee for the striker, but will cover a small contribution of his wages.
What kind of a club has Greenwood joined?
Getafe might not be on the same level as Lazio or Manchester United in terms of magnitude, but it is certainly one of the more decent clubs in Spain.
They currently lie 12th in La Liga after a win, draw and a loss in their opening three games.
Last season, they ended the campaign in 15th place, amid a grueling relegation battle that saw them come only 2 points off the drop zone after 38 games.
Their next game is against the mighty Real Madrid, and despite the tough nature of the fixture, Getafe will be encouraged by the fact that the forced Barcelona to a 0-0 draw in August.
