Blow to Greenwood as Mourinho and Saudi Arabia 'reject' embattled star
FootballMason Greenwood: Uproar As Getafe Sign Embattled Manchester United Star
- Mason Greenwood has joined La Liga side Getafe on a season-long loan deal
- Manchetser United made the decision not to reintegrate him and were looking for ways to offload him
- However, the move has been met with criticism, with fans online condemning Getafe's decision
Mason Greenwood received a last-gasp opportunity to restart his career after Getafe moved in for him on deadline day.
With time running out, it looked like the Manchester United player would have to contend with more months on the sidelines. Last month, the club had mutually agreed with him that he would no longer play for them again.
Greenwood has not played competitively since January 2022, when he was accused of coercive behaviour and sexual assault. He was arrested and subsequently arraigned in court before his charges were dropped early this year.
His case remained an emotive issue, with the Red Devils taking their time before making a decision. The club received protests from multiple groups who were against the possible reintegration of the 21-year-old back to the team.
United were faced with the prospect of paying him close to 8 million euros to terminate his contract if he couldn't find a club. He still has a running contract till 2025 for 75,000 euros weekly.
Fans reactions on Greenwood's transfer
Spanish side Getafe offered a solution to both parties a few hours before the transfer deadline. A section of fans have now turned their wrath on the La Liga club with the term 'disgusting' trending on social media giant X.
"We will support any team Greenwood is playing against."
@CFCA1 said:
"Disgraceful club"
@SanchoEra25 referenced the current ongoing in the Spanish Women's team and questioned Getafe's timing.
"With everything going on with the Spanish woman’s team, you employ this guy. Embarrassing."
There were, however, select messages of support to Greenwood as he seeks to restart his career in the Iberian country. His main issue remains that the law courts might have cleared him, but he still has a case to answer with the court of public opinion.

Sports Brief has also reported that after weeks of speculation, reported mutiny and a delay in finding a solution to comply with Financial Fair Play Rules, Sofyan Amrabat is finally a Manchester United player.
The Moroccan midfielder was among the high-profile players who swapped clubs on deadline day as he moved to England on a season-long loan deal from Fiorentina.
The Red Devils paid 10 million euros as a loan fee with an option to buy for 25 million euros once the loan is over.
