Zapata was protecting the ball at the midfield line when Queretaro's defender Mendoza resorted to an unconventional approach in trying to gain possession.

According to Tribuna, the incident went unnoticed, but VAR stepped in, prompting referee Fernando Hernández to review the pitchside monitor.

Following the game and the controversial incident, Willer Ditta, who is a fellow Liga MX player for Cruz Azul, came to Mendoza's defence regarding his behaviour.

He told Fox Sports, via Daily Star:

"I believe it's quite common for us soccer players to engage in such actions. However, the referees consistently enforce the rules, which is respectable. These are situations that occur during the heat of the moment, but the referees make their judgments."

The two players involved in the unusual incident also played crucial roles in determining the match's outcome.

Mendoza's expulsion in the 62nd minute had a detrimental impact, as Atlas secured a 2-1 victory with Zapata scoring a dramatic injury-time winning goal.

Footballer shown red card twice

Sports Brief also earlier reported that Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was shown a red card twice in Brazil’s clash with Ecuador.

But despite being handed his marching orders two times, the Brazilian somehow managed to stay on the pitch as VAR overturned both decisions.

Alisson is one of the most admired goalkeepers in world football, and his performances have helped Liverpool clinch the Champions League and Premier League in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

De Gea mocks Casemiro

Sports Brief also reported on David De Gea’s hilarious reaction to Casemiro receiving a red card.

De Gea mocked the Video Assistant referee by making reference to a famous Jose Mourinho quote “If I speak, I am in trouble”.

The current AS Roma boss made the phrase famous when he was Chelsea's boss during his second spell at Stamford Bridge.
