- Al-Etifaq are close to signing former Liverpool midfielder
- Georginio Wijnaldum will be the latest star from a European club to move to Saudi Arabia
- The Dutchman will be coached by Steven Gerrard
Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq are set to complete the signing of former Liverpool, Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.
The Dutch midfielder is out of favour in France, and he doesn't seem to be in the plans of new manager Luis Enrique. He joins other top stars who have left the club this summer, including Neymar.
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, PSG are set to receive €8 million for the Dutchman, who will be reunited with former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who controversially moved to the club in July.
He will be coached by Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard, who was appointed Al-Ettifaq's coach in early July. The former Aston Villa manager was one of the first top European coaches to move to Saudi Arabia.
Now, he is looking to pair the former teammates together in midfield.
New start for Wijnaldum
Wijnaldum was wanted by many clubs like Barcelona and PSG. The 32-year-old chose PSG but struggled in France. Jose Mourinho's AS Roma took him on loan last year.
However, his time in Italy was a nightmare. He suffered a fractured tibia, which ruled him out of the 2022 World Cup with the Netherlands in Qatar.
With the move to Saudi Arabia, he is looking to kick start his career, which has stalled following the horrible injury.
At Liverpool, Wijnaldum won the Champions League, Premier League, Super Cup and Club World Cup.
So far this summer, Al-Ettifaq have signed Henderson, striker Moussa Dembele and centre-back Jack Hendry from Club Brugge, per Transfermarkt.
Al-Ettifaq sit fifth in the Saudi Pro League table this season after two wins, a draw and a defeat in four matches.

FootballGerrard struggles with language barrier
Sports Brief earlier reported on Gerrard struggling with the language barrier in training with Al Ettifaq. In the video on Twitter, the former Rangers boss places the ball on the ground before asking, “Who wants it? Do you want it? Tell me then!”
After his players failed to respond to the Englishman's instructions, he can be heard saying, 'No communication'. It is clear the ex-Aston Villa coach will need time to adjust to the demands of the league if he is to keep his job and guide his team.
