  • Romelu Lukaku is set to sign for AS Roma on a season-long loan to reunite with Jose Mourinho
  • The Chelsea striker is out on a second loan after his £97.5 mil move to Stamford Bridge in 2021
  • Lukaku's flight from London to Rome was piloted by the club's owner and set a tracking record

Romelu Lukaku can already feel the love of Romanistas even before he puts pen to paper for the club, with fans already following his steps from the moment he left London.

Chelsea initially insisted on a permanent sale to end a chaotic relationship that began four months into his £97.5 million move to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan in 2021.

Lukaku spent last season on loan at Inter Milan and the Nerazzurri were willing to make the move permanent, but the striker reportedly ghosted calls from the board and teammates despite an agreement between the two clubs.

As reported by CBS Sports, Roma will pay Chelsea £8mil for the season-long loan, while Lukaku will reduce his salary to £7mil for the Giallorossi to cover this.

Lukaku's flight breaks record

Transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano noted that the Belgian arrived in Rome a few minutes before 5pm yesterday and club owner, Daniel Friedkin personally piloted his plane.

According to Italian Football TV, 47,300 fans were tracking the flight from London to Rome: a record-breaking number on Flight Radar, as fans were eager to know their incoming signing's whereabouts.

Jose Mourinho was said to be influential in getting the deal done after speaking to the striker he previously managed briefly at Chelsea and Manchester United.

Lukaku was warmly received in Rome at the Ciampino airport by almost 5,000 fans, including media brands, as the former Everton striker arrived to complete the formalities of his move, per Sports Brief.

Mourinho's old comments on Lukaku

Sports Brief also reported on Mourinho's previous comments on Lukaku after it emerged the Belgian striker had accepted the Italian capital as his next destination.

The Special One briefly managed the striker and made a disparity between the two times, claiming despite being a man, there is still a kid in the man who needs love.
