FootballMarcus Edwards: Meet Chelsea Target Who Has Eerily Similar Characteristics to Messi
- Interesting reports indicate that Chelsea are ready to trigger the €60 million release clause of Marcus Edwards
- The Blues have already spent a staggering £350million on new signings this summer alone
- Highlights of Edwards playing in the Primera Liga show the 24-year-old is like a mini-Lionel Messi
Chelsea are reportedly considering moving for Sporting CP winger, Marcus Edwards despite already spending heavily in the summer.
Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino only fielded two attack-minded players in his starting XI on Friday, August 25 against Luton Town, and is keen on adding such players to his squad.
As such, the name Marcus Edwards has been tossed in the rumour mill, and the winger is now strongly being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
According to The Telegraph, Chelsea contacted Edwards’ representatives a few weeks ago, but nothing materialized.
Their need for a new attacker heightened after their long-term target Michael Olise signed a new deal with Crystal Palace, ending all hopes of a move to West London.
As cited on SportBible, Pochettino is very familiar with Edwards, courtesy of his time at Tottenham, when the winger was coming through the ranks.
At 24 years old, Edwards appears to have finally hit the peak of his powers, if a video of his style of play is anything to go by.
“Edwards plays like Messi”
Since rumours that Chelsea were ready to trigger Edwards’ €60 million release clause emerged, Premier League fans have taken a keen interest in the winger.
And as it turns out, he has the stuff to cause problems in the Premier League, as he has a combination of pace, power, and close-ball control.
It is no wonder that Pochettino likened him to Messi in 2016.

Football“He's small, he's left-footed, I remember a little bit [Erik] Lamela when he was at River Plate, remember he had long hair, when he was 14, 15 years old, there is a lot of videos on YouTube that you can see, that he took the ball, didn't give a pass and shot straight away,” Pochettino said at the time.
Pochettino’s ambitious treble claim mocked
Sports Brief also reported on how Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino was taunted online for making an ambitious claim about Chelsea’s goals this season.
The gaffer’s comments were made ahead of Chelsea’s clash against AFC Wimbledon in the EFL Cup second round on Wednesday, August 30.
The 51-year-old boldly declared that he wanted to win the FA Cup, Premier League, and Carabao Cup with the Blues.
