  • Atletico Madrid defeated Rayo Vallecano in match round three of the La Liga season
  • The Spanish capital team previously defeated Real Madrid by seven goals in 2019
  • Atleti fans have taken to Twitter to troll their city rivals

Atletico Madrid put in one of the best showings of the new La Liga season so far after putting seven goals past Francisco Rodriguez’s Rayo Vallecano.

Deigo Simeone’s men lit up the Vallecas as early as the second minute following a sublime finish from star forward Antoine Griezmann.

The Cochoneros raced into a three-nil first-half lead following goals from Memphis Depay and right-back Manuel Molina.

With the Estadio Vallecas being one of the most challenging grounds for any visiting team in recent years in La Liga, many expected a response from Rayo. However, it appeared the Madrid district had no answer for Simeone’s romping attack, as substitutes Alvaro Morata, Marcos Llorente, and Angel Correa added four goals in the second half to seal the seven-nil win on the night.

Atleti fans, visibly elated, took to Twitter to express their excitement and take subtle digs at their city rivals Real Madrid, who they defeated by the same scoreline in 2019. @feelAtleti tweeted:

“Atlético Madrid scoring 7 goals against small clubs is nothing new.”

Atletico set record at Rayo

The Spanish giant’s historic win at Rayo also saw them etch their name in history as they became the first Atleti side to score seven goals in one match away from home since 1948, according to reports from La Liga TV.

The Spanish giants, who have their sights set on clinching another La Liga title, will now shift their attention to another difficult task as they welcome wounded Sevilla to the Civitas Metropolitano on Sunday.

Atletico to terminate Felix’s contract?

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Atletico Madrid dismissing Joao Felix’s exit attempts as he sought to terminate his contract and force a move away from the Spanish club this summer.

The Portuguese youngster received a hostile reception at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium during his club’s La Liga opening game against Granada, where the home fans booed him.

However, Atletico have reportedly told Felix that he will need to buy out his own contract if he is that desperate to leave this summer after describing his termination request as ’a joke’.
