- Liverpool had a disastrous opening half hour against Newcastle United
- The Reds went behind thanks to a mistake from Trent Alexander Arnold in the 25th minute
- Two minutes later, they were down to 10 men as their captain was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity
Liverpool gave themselves a mountain to climb on Sunday, August 27 after going 1-0 and one man down against a rejuvenated Newcastle United in a space of two minutes.
The Reds were slight favourites going into the game but it was always going to be an uphill task against a Newcastle side that has been transformed since the takeover by a consortium led by the Public Investment Fund.
Eddie Howe’s side appeared to have a plan, to utilize the weaknesses of right back Trent-Alexander Arnold, who had a tendency to meander out of position at times.
Trent was lucky not to see red card inside the opening five minutes of the game as he was cautioned with yellow early on for dissent after throwing the ball back in play in frustration.
Moments later, he put his arms across Anthony Gordon, conceding a foul, but the referee showed some leniency when he could easily have drawn a second yellow card.
Trent concedes, Van Dijk sent off
Those early signs that Liverpool were shaky at the back proved right as they were behind at the 25th minute mark when Trent Alexander Arnold somehow failed to control a simple back pass from Mohamed Salah to allow former Everton man Gordon to charge through on goal to slot beyond Alisson for the opener.
Moments later and Newcastle were through again as Alexander Isak was about to test the keeper but was impeded by Virgil Van Dijk, who seemingly left the referee with no choice but to issue red in an apparent punishment to the Liverpool captain for denying a goal scoring opportunity.
