  • Inter Miami secured a comfortable 2-0 win over New York Red Bulls on Saturday
  • Lionel Messi got his maiden league goal with a late tap in to secure victory for his side
  • An angle of Messi’s strike showed the Argentine all but set himself up for an easy finish

Fans are still trying to figure out how Lionel Messi managed to beat at least three defenders inside their own box with a killer pass to set up his goal on Saturday, August 26.

Inter Miami returned to MLS action, as they beat New York Red Bulls 2-0 away from home, with the Argentine maestro opening his account in the league.

The visitors took the lead in the first half at the Red Bull Arena through Diego Gomez in a game which Messi started on the bench.

But the Argentine eventually was introduced in the second half to play for over half an hour of football, and as expected, he made his mark in the game with another delightful goal.

In the build-up to the goal, Messi received a pass from Jordi Alba in the box, and did brilliantly to protect it from an opponent with a classic turn.

At this point, everyone expected the 36-year-old to look for space and take on a shot, which would not be something too surprising considering his talent.

But instead, Messi played a brilliant through ball through three Red Bull players to Benamin Cremaschi, and proceeded to make a brief run into space in anticipation of a cutback.

Cremaschi read the play brilliantly as he laid the ball to Messi with the defence well beaten for the Argentine to simply tap the ball home.

The goal was simple enough, but it was the build-up that left even the commentator in awe.

“This is one of the most ridiculous balls I have ever seen. Look at the ball into Cremaschi with all the Red Bull defenders,” the commentator could be heard saying in a video shared by ESPN.

Meanwhile, Inter Miami boss Gerardo Martino warned his players after the game that they needed to get used to playing without Messi as the Argentine may not be available for every game.

Martino’s warning

As Sports Brief reported, Tata Martino had a warning to the rest of the Inter Miami squad about the potential absence of Messi.

Messi's first eight games for the club have come in the cup competitions - he helped the club win the inaugural Leagues Cup and reach the US Open Cup final.

Speaking after the win against Red Bull, he confirmed Messi would join Argentina for their World Cup qualifier games against Bolivia and Ecuador, which makes their lead and control of the game in the first hour a good thing for the team.
