FootballDi Maria Slams Juventus, Max Allegri After Contract Renewal Talks Broke Down
- Angel Di Maria has accused Juventus of dishonesty a couple of months after leaving
- Di Maria, who has since joined Benfica, only lasted for one season in Italy
- He has appeared to accuse the decision-makers at the club of forcing him out
Angel Di Maria has, for the first time, revealed the intricacies that saw him leave Juventus after just one season. Di Maris surprisingly ended his relationship with the Serie A giants after a tumultuous campaign.
He had joined on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain on a one-year deal. Speculation was rife that he would extend his contract in Turin, but he departed and returned to his old club, Benfica.
The Argentine has now revealed that if the circumstances were different, he could have renewed his contract, but the club's directors and Head Coach, Massimiliano Allegri, kept changing goalposts.
"I had many meetings with the Juve directors and it was not what I had discussed with the coach. Sometimes, you realise words aren’t worth very much," as quoted by Football Italia.
The Old Lady had a myriad of off-pitch problems that saw them docked points twice despite winning the first appeal.
Di Maria insists that he tried to give his best whenever he was afforded an opportunity to play. He featured 40 times in Italy, scoring eight goals and setting up a further seven, as captured by Transfermakt.
"I never quite understood what happened during the season. I tried to understand and to do my duty when it was my chance to play, but I didn’t play very much and in the end, that affected me."
Why Di Maria chose Benfica
Sports Brief has also reported that Di Maria has disclosed the reasons behind his decision to reject lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and instead return to SL Benfica in the soon-to-end summer transfer window.
