  • David De Gea lead a number of football professionals in criticizing Spain FA President Luis Rubiales
  • Rubiales spoke at a general assembly where he stated he would not resign from his position
  • The 46-year old has come under scrutiny for his actions during the Women’s World Cup final last Sunday

Former Manchester United and Spain national team goalkeeper David De Gea has responded to Luis Rubiales’ latest press conference in a telling post.

Rubiales, despite increased pressure to stand down as Spain FA President, said at a press conference that he would not be stepping down

The embattled President claimed there was a witch hunt on him following his actions on some of the members of the Spain Women’s team on Sunday, August 17

David De Gea and Iker Casillas had telling reactions to Luis Rubiales ‘s extraordinary press conference on Friday, August 25.

Rubiales was largely expected to announce he would step down from his role as president of the Spanish football federation when a general assembly was called by the federation.

But, in an extraordinary twist, Rubiales took the opportunity to viciously defend his actions as he alluded to an attempt to “socially assassinate” him.

Quite controversially, he went on to describe the “kiss” made on Jenni Hermoso as a “peck”, adding that it was consensual, per the BBC.

During the World Cup celebrations, the Spaniard was also spotted grabbing his crotch while standing next to Queen Lerizia and her daughter.

Here is what Rubiales said at the general assembly on Friday, per The Mirror:

"I want to give my explanation about the peck (small kiss), it was a peck. The desire that I could have giving that kiss was the same desire that I could have giving my daughter a kiss, here there was no dominance."
"It was spontaneous, mutual and consensual. It was consensual. I have a great relationship with all the players and we had very affectionate moments in this tournament. The moment Jenni appeared, she picked me up from the ground and when she left me we hugged and I told her forget about the penalty, you've been fantastic in this World Cup and she told me you're a star, I told her a little bit? and it happened.”

De Gea and footballers respond

Rubiales’ explanation did not sit well with a number of players, particularly those affiliated with Spain.

Former United goalie De Gea, who was recently released by the club, was among the first to react as he tweeted, “My ears are bleeding”.

Iker Casillas, the most capped Spain goalkeeper, also chimed in after the presser by tweeting, “embarrassing,”.

Ex Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin took to Instagram with a telling statement, saying:

“The narcissist never believes they have made a mistake, they are able to lie, manipulate the truth and make the victim guilty in order to retain their power over others.”

Notably, Hermoso, who is at the centre of the incident, said earlier that she “did not enjoy it” and called for Rubiales’ actions to not go unpunished.
