Former Nigerian international, Mikel Obi has been named among Chelsea legends that will host their counterparts from Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge in September.
The defensive midfielder was part of the squad that defeated the German side to win the UEFA Champions League in 2012.
Fellow superstars John Terry, Florent Malouda, Salomon Kalou, Michael Essien, and manager Roberto Di Matteo have all been invited to the encounter.
The exhibition match is organised in honour of the legendary Gianluca Vialli.
According to a club statement, the proceeds from the game will be split between The Chelsea Foundation and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, which supports the work of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, where Vialli was treated.
The club statement added:
“Mikel was arguably our best player on the night in Munich, and who can forget Ramires’s iconic chip in the Nou Camp that set us on our way to a remarkable semi-final comeback.
“We can today also announce six other former Blues who will be featuring on 9 September. They are Hilario, Frank Sinclair, Pierluigi Casiraghi, Jon Harley, Sam Dalla Bona and Danny Granville.
“Other former players confirmed to be taking part include Gianfranco Zola, Claude Makelele, Carlo Cudicini, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Frank Leboeuf. It promises to be a very special evening indeed.”
Mikel on lucky football career
Sports Brief earlier reported that Mikel Obi has disclosed that he is among the luckiest Nigerians to play football at the top.
The former Chelsea defensive midfielder shared his journey to stardom with some youths who converged at Wave Beach in Lagos during the Vyootopia Mission89 Africa digital sports conference 2022.
Mikel, who had 91 caps and six goals for the Super Eagles, was the 'personality spotlight' at the well-attended event, themed - 'Adopting new technologies in digital sports and increasing opportunities for African youth in the sports industry'.
