  • Bruno Fernandes was named Manchester United captain after Harry Maguire was stripped of it
  • Fernandes has been heavily criticised lately, with pundits claiming he's undeserving
  • The Portuguese magnifico has had enough and fired back at the wagging tongues

Bruno Fernandes is aware of his critics over Manchester United's captaincy and has spared a moment to hit back at them with a telling Instagram video.

Fernandes was appointed permanent captain by head coach Erik ten Hag after former skipper Harry Maguire was stripped of it, having already lost his place in the starting 11 and facing an uncertain future at the club.

The Portuguese wore the armband for most of last season while the England international defender was on the bench, forcing Erik ten Hag to relieve him of the responsibilities eventually.

He ranted at the referee after United's 2-0 loss to Tottenham. He demanded an apology from Jonathan Moss, leading fans and pundits to call on the manager to remove him due to the pathetic outburst, as reported by Mirror UK.

Fernandes hits back at critics

The player is not blind nor deaf to the media and is aware of the growing concerns and criticisms of his position as the leader of his teammates and has responded indirectly.

As captured by United Faithfuls, he posted a video of Super Bowl winner Deion Saunders hitting out at critics on his Instagram story,

"What about me would make me think that I care about your opinion of me? Your opinion of me is not the opinion that I have of myself. You ain't make me so you can't break me," Saunders said in the video.

This is a direct jibe at pundits such as Simon Jordan, Chris Sutton and Andy Townsend, who called for his removal due to his antics during the last game against Spurs.

Ten Hag justifies Bruno's captaincy

Sports Brief reported that ten Hag justified selecting Fernandes as United captain after the club made it official.

The Dutch tactician claimed the 28-year-old is a leader by example and an inspiration to other players, hence picking him for the responsibility, but admits he needs help to succeed.

The former Ajax boss added that his understanding of the game and social connection skills were also pivotal as he could be an intermediary between him and his teammates on the pitch.
