FootballBlow to Mason Greenwood As Jose Mourinho and Saudi Arabia ‘Reject’ Embattled Star
- Mason Greenwood has hit an early snag in finding a new club after Manchester United released him
- The EPL giants made the decision to terminate his contract after concluding its internal investigations
- Jose Mourinho's AS Roma has been linked with a move for the striker, but those reports have been shut down
Mason Greenwood's pursuit of kickstarting his professional return to football has suffered a series of fresh blows as he faces rejection from multiple clubs.
Greenwood was officially released by Manchester United earlier this week after the conclusion of the club's internal investigations amidst serious backlash from the fans.
The striker last played a game of football in January 2022 before his career took a turn for the worst. He was accused of sexual assault and coercive behaviour before being arrested and arraigned in court to face charges.
Manchester United's statement
The Crown Prosecution Services dropped his case in February and he was free to resume playing football, pending acceptance from the club.
In explaining their decision to terminate ties with the 21-year-old, the Red Devils CEO, Richard Arnold, reiterated that he was convinced he did not commit the said offences, but it was imperative that he continued his career elsewhere for the sake of unity in the club.
"While I am satisfied that Mason did not commit the acts he was charged with, Mason's accepted that he has made mistakes which he takes responsibility for. This case has provoked strong opinions, and it is my responsibility to minimise any distraction to the unity we are seeking within the club," as quoted on the club's website.
Greenwood rejected by two clubs
There had been earlier reports that Jose Mourinho was weighing up a reunion with the young striker at AS Roma. Roma Press now reports that the Italian club has distanced itself from a possible move for the free agent. This is despite earlier reports indicating that Mourinho had personally spoken to Greenwood.

FootballAdditionally, Saudi Arabia, which has been a major attraction for talents this summer, believes that Greenwood would 'be too toxic' for what they are trying to build, as captured in the Telegraph. Steven Gerrard, who is in charge of Al-Ettifaq, had already brandished the news of a possible move as 'fake news.'
Man United drop Greenwood shirts
Sports Brief also reported on Man United's decision to drop Greenwood’s shirts from their official kit launch for the 2023/24 season.
This means supporters will not be able to get a shirt with the forward's name on the back after it was omitted from the club launch.
All other names from the Red Devils' senior men's and women's sides are available, but Greenwood is not included among them.
