  • Pep Guardiola will not be available for Manchester City for the team’s next two fixtures
  • The Spaniard underwent a minor back surgery and will recuperate in Spain
  • This is not the first time Man City have had to play without their Spanish tactician

Manchester City’s last two occasions when they had to play without Pep Guardiola had contrasting fortunes, Sports Brief has learnt.

On Tuesday, August 22, it was announced that Guardiola would miss his team’s next two fixtures after undergoing a minor back surgery in Barcelona.

While the surgery was successful, Guardiola will continue to recuperate in the city, leaving Manchester City at the hands of his assistant Juanma Lillo.

Lillo only returned to the club earlier this month, after a spell in Qatar as manager of Al Sadd, as reported on Sky Sports.

The 57-year-old will now take charge of City’s next two fixtures, against Sheffield United and Fulham.

When Man City missed Guardiola

This is not Manchester City's first game without their tactical genius at the dugout.

In 2018, a 48-year old Guardiola was slapped with a touchline ban, which meant his then-assistant Mikel Arteta had to take charge of a tie against Lyon. The Citizens went on to lose 2-1.

On another different occasion, Guardiola missed his side’s FA Cup third-round tie against Swindon Town after contracting COVID.

Lillo was also affected and this meant that assistant coach Rodolfo Borrell had to take charge of the game which City won 4-1.

The win was rather impressive as it also came in the absence of several of City’s first team players, who also had to isolate.

Lillo has no playing experience but as a coach, he began his journey at 16.

Guardiola slapped with parking ticket

Sports Brief also reported on the hilarious incident that saw Pep Guardiola slapped with a parking ticket by a traffic warden, who asked for a selfie moments later.

Since the whole incident took place in public, it was left bystanders in stitches, with everyone seeing the funny side.

Notably, Guardiola jokingly hit back at the warden by telling him he would also have to pay for a picture with him.
