While many are of the opinion that Cristiano Ronaldo remains one of the finest players football has ever seen, a few others, including Dutch football icon Marco Van Basten, have their reservations.
The 38-year-old Portuguese, who has succeeded tremendously at various clubs at different stages in his career, seems to be still going strong thanks to his tremendous fitness, which few footballers his age can boast of.
Considering Ronaldo’s enormous haul of achievements and records, the latest comments from Netherlands legend Van Basten can be considered quite surprising.
Van Basten on Ronaldo
The former AC Milan star recently made a surprising comparison between himself and Ronaldo.
Speaking on the recent edition of the De Cor podcast, the former striker discussed players that have approached football in the same manner and dedication as players of his era.
“Lewandowski looks a little like me,” the former Milan star explained.
“Cristiano Ronaldo I think, has come close to me. Although he physically is stronger than me. Ronaldo is 38 years old and still active. I would have liked to see if I got to play until I was 38. I think I would have been even better,” he added.
During his playing career, the Dutch star was undoubtedly one of football’s finest forwards and he won the UEFA Euros in some style, scoring one of the finest goals of the 20th century against the Soviet Union in the Netherlands' 1-0 triumph.
Van Basten went on to win the European Cup in 1989 and 1990 with AC Milan, before eventually suffering a career-ending injury which saw him miss 55 games over the course of 391 days for the Serie A club. The 58-year-old, according to reports from Transfermarkt.com, would go on to retire at the age of 28 due to his persistent ankle problem. He won three Ballon d’Ors and scored over 350 career goals.
