FootballTen Hag Brutally Told He Made Mistake Naming Fernandes as Man United Captain
- Erik ten Hag named Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United’s new captain before the start of the season
- The Red Devils have one win and one loss in their opening two games under the midfielder's leadership
- Ten Hag has since been told by pundits that he made a mistake naming the Portuguese star as captain
Erik ten Hag has been brutally told that he made a mistake in naming Bruno Fernandes as the new Manchester United captain.
The Red Devils have come under fire for their performances since the start of the new season and their latest 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur only served as a reminder of there being something missing in the squad to put them back on a path to success.
Before the start of the season, Harry Maguire was stripped off the captaincy amid reports the centre-back was on his way out of Old Trafford.
Fernandes, who joined United in 2020, was then handed the armband. However, this move has been criticised by Andy Townsend and Ally McCoist, a TalkSport duo who believe ten Hag’s move was ill-motivated.
"I don't think [Fernandes] is captain material. Too many times now I see people given the armband, not because they're the right man for the job, but because he's the senior player, or the top man, or biggest asset," said Townsend, who captained Aston Villa and the Ireland national team, per The Mirror.
McCoist seemed to concur with Townsend, but added that United’s problems ran deeper than simply who was the team's captain.
Fernandes recently courted controversy after he appeared to demand an apology from referees after his team was denied a penalty against Tottenham.
As cited by Sky Sports, Alejandro Garnacho’s shot came off Christian Romero’s hand but referee, Michael Oliver, waved away appeals to the dismay of the United captain.

FootballWith the September 1 deadline approaching fast, the Red Devils are struggling to bring in new signings as they would need to offload some players from their current squad.
Maguire was on the verge of a move to West Ham United but the deal fell through after it emerged the England international was willing to sit and fight for his place under ten Hag.
Possible Clubs Mason Greenwood can join
Sports Brief also reported on Mason Greenwood’s current transfer options after Man United decided to part ways with the embattled striker on August 21.
The Red Devils released a statement confirming he was being released, with his future having been up in the air for over one and a half years before then.
Greenwood is unlikely to be short of transfer options, with a number of teams said to be queuing for his signature, including ones in the Saudi Pro League.
