A clip of Lionel Messi moments before scoring Inter Miami’s opening goal in the Leagues Cup final has gone viral.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has settled seamlessly into the MLS with his new club, and is already en route to becoming Inter Miami’s all-time top goal scorer.

He has been crucial for the David Beckham-owned side, particularly in the Leagues Cup, where he has scored in all the games he has participated in.

10 goals in seven appearances for Inter Miami is certainly not a bad stat for Messi, who has at times been criticized for being a passenger as his team is toiling against opponents.

This claim appears to be backed by fan footage, which shows Messi strolling as his team moved forward in an attack.

From nowhere, the Argentine then sprung to life, and advanced towards the Nashville goal with no opponents on him. He then raised his hands for his teammate to spot him, and once he received the ball, he set himself up with a touch before curling a trademark effort into the back of the net to give Inter Miami the lead.

The science behind Messi walking

While it is easy to criticize Messi’s work rate during games, there is actually a brilliant reason behind it.

As cited by Sports Brief, the simple explanation is that a player of Messi's calibre isn't expected to press players. The rest of the team is supposed to work for him, and get the ball to his feet and leave the rest to him.

The New Yorker further reports that there is science behind this. The publication says:

"When you learn to bifurcate your brain, keeping an eye on the main action while devoting equal or greater attention to what’s happening off the ball, the game opens up to you.
"It is then that you begin to pick out trends and patterns: the positions that individuals are taking up in and out of possession, the shapes and formations that teams are assuming when they attack and defend, the spaces that are opening up on the pitch and the ways that the adversaries are, or aren’t, exploiting them."

Messi on artificial pitches

Sports Brief also reported on Lionel Messi’s take on the artificial football pitches that are prevalent in the MLS.

Messi is bound to run into unfamiliar territory, as six of the clubs in the American League still use artificial turfs.

In his recent press conference, Messi also spoke on the hot weather in the state of Florida.
