The sending off of Takehiro Tomiyasu during Arsenal's Premier League meeting with London rivals Crystal Palace has sparked a storm.
The Gunners faced off against the Eagles on Monday night, August 21, at Selhurst Park in their second Premier League game of the new season.
Mikel Arteta's charges were keen to maintain their perfect start to the campaign during the meeting, having won their season opener against Nottingham Forest.
However, the match was marred with controversy in the second half after Tomiyasu was booked twice in seven minutes before he was handed his marching orders.
Sportbible reports that the Japan international was initially punished for wasting time by referee David Coote before he got a second booking after he was adjudged to have fouled Palace's Jordan Ayew as he raced forward.
His red card sparked a mini-melee with his teammates and Mikel Arteta protesting the decision.
Speaking after the match, Arteta openly criticised the refereeing during the encounter.
"The new rules is one thing. The new rules that I don’t know where they are and they haven’t communicated, that’s something very different," the Spaniard said when asked how frustrating the application of the new time-wasting rules are.
Arsenal stun Crystal Palace
Fortunately for the Gunners, they were able to see off Palace to cart home maximum points.
Metro UK reports that Martin Odegaard's solitary goal was the only difference in the match as the visitors stormed to victory.
The Arsenal skipper found the back of the net from the penalty spot, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0.
