- Acres of forest on the island were ravaged by the wildfires which started last week Tuesday
La Liga champions, Barcelona, registered their first win of the 2023/24 campaign after beating Cadiz 2-0 at home. They worked for the win and for most of the game, it seemed they would have to settle for a draw.
However, Pedri gave La Blaugrana the lead in the 82nd minute before Ferran Torres sealed the win with the second goal in added time.
It was Barcelona's first game in the city's Olympic Stadium, a venue where they will play their home games this season as Camp Nou undergoes refurbishment.
Xavi's side were held to a frustrating draw against Getafe in their opening game last weekend. They now have four points from two games, while rivals Real Madrid have six after two wins from two.
Pedri dedicates goal to Tenerife
After scoring Barcelona's first goal, Pedri dedicated it to Tenerife, the Spanish island where the Barca youngster was born. Tenerife has been battling wildfires in the past week.
Since the wildfires started on Tuesday last week, 12,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. According to AP, 29,000 acres of forest and scrubland had been burned. The good news is that no lives have been lost to the tragedy.
On Monday morning, Pedri posted a photo on Instagram with a message of support to Tenerife as they look to end the fires that threaten residents and tourists. Several villages on the island - located southwest of mainland Spain - were evacuated.
