  • Chelsea were silenced 3-1 by West Ham United during the London derby on Sunday
  • Enzo Fernandez had a chance to turn around the game for the Blues from the penalty spot
  • However, he saw his effort saved before the Hammers stepped up to win the tie

A section of fans have claimed that Enzo Fernandez's missed penalty during Chelsea's Premier League meeting against West Ham United should have been retaken.

The Hammers demolished the Blues 3-1 during the London derby on Sunday, August 20, to hand Pochettino and the Blues a reality check.

According to The Guardian, Nayed Aguerd opened the scoring for West Ham inside seven minutes of action before he was later sent off.

Carney Chukwuemeka restored parity for Chelsea in the 28th minute before Fernandez spurned a golden opportunity to put the Blues 2-1 up from the penalty spot.

While the Blues' fans were disappointed with the missed chance, they were even more irate after spotting an incident in the run-up to the penalty.

Fernandez's penalty should have been retaken

The fans argued that the midfielder's penalty should have been retaken because Hammers midfielder Tomas Soucek entered the box before the ball was struck.

The Sun reports that replays from the incident appeared to show Soucek encroaching in the area as Fernandez prepared to take the spot kick.

@damilola2i observed:

"Look at Soucek encroaching before Enzo even touches the ball."

@CFCPys added:

"Sky Sports showing Soucek encroached on the penalty, should have been re-taken."

@firstphas3 wondered:

"How is that not encroachment for the penalty? Soucek was in the box."

@Mponzisports lamented:

"Frankly, the penalty should be repeated. Tomas Soucek encroached the game before Fernandez kicked the ball. I do not even know why VAR did not check this."

The official Premier League rule on encroachment states:

"For player encroachment in the box, it is now judged on any part of a player’s body that is on the ground when the kick is taken.
"Therefore, if any part of the foot is on the penalty area or arc line, it is encroachment."

Poch rates Caicedo's debut

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Mauricio Pochettino has rated Moises Caicedo's performance after the midfielder made his debut for Chelsea on Sunday, August 20, against West Ham United.

Pochettino had no kind words when he was quizzed about Caicedo conceding a penalty in his post-match interview, with the Argentine admitting the incident negatively impacted the game.
