  • Chelsea’s wretched run continued after a 3- 1 defeat to West Ham
  • The Blues now have just 1 win in 14 games in a run that dates back to last season
  • This is the club’s worst run of form since the 80s

A brutal stat has exposed Chelsea’s problems in the aftermath of the 3-1 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday, August 20.

The Hammers somehow claimed a famous win in the London derby despite playing more than 30 minutes with 10 men after the dismissal of Nayef Aguerd.

Aguerd opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a header from debutant James Ward=Prowse’s cross.

Teenager Carney Chukwuemeka got his side back in the game with a brilliant skill and shot, and the Blues had the chance to make it 2-1 from the spot kick, but Enzo Fernandez saw his effort saved by Alphonse Areola.

In the second half, Michail Antonio restored West Ham’s lead with a powerful angled strike, but West Ham would see their resilience tested moments later when Aguerd received a second yellow card.

Despite a one-man advantage, Mauricio Pochettino’s men could not find a way back in the game, even after bringing on Moises Caicedo, who signed for the club for an initial £100m earlier in the week.

Caicedo was guilty of taking the game away from his new side as he conceded a late penalty with a careless challenge on Emerson, and Lucas Paqueta made no mistake from 12 yards to seal all three points.

Immediately the third goal went in for West Ham, Chelsea fans on the away stand had already accepted their fate on the day and could be seen exiting the stadium, perhaps with a feeling of dejavu.

After a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in their opening league game, the Blues are still looking for their first league win for more than four months in a run that dates back to the 2022/23 season under interim boss Frank Lampard.

A quick spot check will reveal that the Blues’ last league win came when they claimed a 3-1 win against Bournemouth on May 6.

Prior to that, they won by the same scoreline against Leicester City in March. Defeat against the Hammers means the Blues only have one win in their last 14 league games, and the last time they experienced such a torrid run of form was in the 80s, as per Soccerway.com.

The Blues will hope to bounce back to winning ways when they face newcomers Luton town on August 25.
