  • Jamie Carragher recently gave a scathing assessment of Manchester United's Casemiro
  • The former Liverpool man claimed United acquired the Brazilian midfielder out of panic
  • Casemiro has been an integral part of Erik ten Hag’s team since joining from Real Madrid

Manchester United midfielder, Casemiro, has been labelled as a ‘panic buy’ in a scathing assessment by former Liverpool man, Jamie Carragher.

United spent approximately £70 million to acquire the services of the Brazilian last summer and he brought some much-needed stability to the heart of the team’s midfield.

However, towards the end of the season, the 30-year-old’s performances dipped and the drop in form appears to have carried on to the new campaign.

Wolverhampton Wanderers thoroughly dominated United in their first game, with the Red Devils clawing their way to a 1-0 win.

Through his column in The Telegraph, Carragher had a brutal take on Casemiro as he explained why he believed acquiring the Brazilian was a mistake on Erik ten Hag’s part.

Fans with long memories will remember the midfielder was United's second choice after the Red Devils had missed out on signing a stubborn Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

In his column, Carragher drew comparisons on the heavy-spending Chelsea’s new acquisitions and that of Arsenal to how United ’s had gone about:

"The prices for [Enzo] Fernandez, [Declan] Rice, and [Moises] Caicedo are astronomical. They are also good deals. The proof of that is the £70 million Manchester United paid last summer for Casemiro. The Brazilian will end up costing United more than Arsenal and Chelsea paid for Rice and Caicedo. Caicedo and Rice are examples of thinking ahead - going big now to save cash for the next six or seven years in which they will assume their role."

According to the pundit, Casemiro is not 'value for money' in a transfer market that has seen the traditional football number 6 rocket in price.

Carragher's brutal take on the Brazilian continued, per The Mirror:

"[Casemiro] was a panic buy when he joined a year ago, bought in the immediate aftermath of the failed pursuit of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona; an ageing, stellar name signed for big money and on a massive salary to appease increasingly disgruntled fans, despite the fact he will need replacing with a similarly massive outlay two years on."

United will come up against Tottenham Hotspur in their next game on August 20 as ten Hag seeks a better performance from his team.

Chelsea's dig at Liverpool with Lavia video

Sports Brief also reported on Chelsea taking a dig at Liverpool with their recent video on social media to announce the arrival of new signing, Romeo Lavia.

The clip on the Blues account shows their newest star in the evening at the club's Cobham training facility after completing his medical on August 17.

The background song was Central Cee's 6 for 6 and it passed two messages with its lyrics, one set exemplifying Lavia's journey up from the youth level.
