FootballMarseille Report English Referee Michael Oliver to UEFA After UCL Elimination
- Marseille have lodged a complaint to UEFA about English referee, Michael Oliver
- Oliver has been accused of making dodgy calls in their Champions League qualifying tie
- Marseille were dumped out of the UCL by Greek club Panathinaikos via penalties
Marseille blame their Champions League ouster on poor officiating, and the French club is holding English referee Michael Oliver responsible.
The French team were eliminated via a penalty shoot-out by Panathinaikos after a series of disputed judgements after Geoffrey Kondogbia was sent off in the first leg, and the Greek club were also awarded a late penalty in the reverse fixture.
According to GOAL, Marseille contested a number of referee Oliver's judgements in the second leg, including the awarding of a penalty, which Fotis Ioannidis converted in the ninth minute of stoppage time to force extra time and, ultimately, a penalty shootout.
The Ligue 1 team is believed to be furious that Panathinaikos' penalty was awarded following a VAR check after the Englishman dismissed their own previous appeal.
The first of Marseille’s penalty kicks was missed by Matteo Guendouzi, with their opponents converting five out of five to advance to the Champions League next round.
Guendouzi turns villain for Marseille
Meanwhile, Matteo Guendouzi’s two blunders ensured Marseille were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Greek club Panathinaikos on Wednesday night, Talk Sport reports.
Former Arsenal forward, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice for Marseille in the second leg, but his ex-Gunners teammate Guendouzi suffered a nightmare match after the 24-year-old gave away a penalty in the match’s closing stages.
After both teams failed to score in extra time, the game went to penalties. Goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli saved Guendouzi’s effort as Panathinaikos won 5-3 to set up a clash against Braga for a place in the group stage.
