- The La Liga President has aimed a dig at Manchester City and the Premier League
- He made the comments after Man City beat Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup
- Most La Liga clubs are struggling financially and can't compete with the Premier League
Manchester City added another piece of hardware to their trophy cabinet on Tuesday night, beating Sevilla on penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup.
After the eventful encounter, La Liga president, Javier Tebas congratulated Sevilla for their commendable performance but appeared to throw shade at Man City and the Premier League.
Sevilla came close to winning their second UEFA Super Cup but lost 5-4 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 after extra time. The Spanish side overcame the odds to win last year's Europa League.
Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side took the lead through Youssef En-Nesyri and were denied several times by Man City goalkeeper Ederson. Pep Guardiola's side struggled, but Cole Palmer's looped header evened proceedings, per the Guardian.
Man City won the treble last season and will be looking to repeat that feat this season.
Tebas shades Premier League
Tebas congratulated Sevilla for their effort with a Tweet on X, but made some controversial comments about Man City and the Premier League.
"The message of Sevilla in these days of doomsayers is spectacular. The sustainability, work and competitiveness of our league stands up strongly against a football model of deficit and waste. Congratulations and thank you for the great display you have given!"
Those comments were met with mixed reactions from La Liga and Premier League fans. State-owned clubs like Man City have received heavy criticism for their perceived uncompetitive spending.
Spanish clubs have lagged behind in the transfer market, while Premier League clubs continue to splash astonishing amounts on players.
This summer, the Saudi Pro League has also spent more than La Liga, although Barcelona almost went bankrupt for their reckless spending in the last few years.
