FootballMamelodi Sundowns Pursue Percy Tau Return but Face Huge Al Ahly Problem
- Mamelodi Sundowns are keen on signing a former player who left them
- Percy Tau has enjoyed an impressive season with Egyptian side Al Ahly
- Tau helped The Red Devils win the CAF Champions League once again
Could Percy Tau be returning to play for Mamelodi Sundowns?
The Al Ahly star has been linked with a move to his former side, but his contract with the Egyptian side could prevent that.
As noted by Soccer Laduma, Sundowns are keen on bringing the attacker back but could face a major obstacle.
Tau has a year left on his current contract with the Egyptian side, but Al Ahly’s deal with him could see the South African head off to Europe instead of back home.
According to a source who spoke to the publication, Tau won’t be sold to a fellow African side unless he becomes a free agent.
“Al Ahly has a watertight contract with him. It doesn’t allow him to move to any team mainly in Africa, unless he is a free agent. That’s tough.
“They say they can make an exception for European offers. That’s where the problem lies now. The club (Sundowns) really wanted him back and to play a major part mainly in the Champions League,” the source claimed.
Tau has been in exceptional form for the Egyptian side this season, especially in the CAF Champions League, where he helped his side win a record-extending 11th continental title.
As noted by Transfermarkt, the South African scored 10 goals in 40 appearances for the side last season. Five of those goals came in the Champions League.
Overall, he has scored 18 goals in 74 appearances for the Egyptian side. He previously made 103 appearances for Masandawana, scoring 24 goals and notching 27 assists.
