  • Sam Kerr scored a breathtaking goal in the Women's World Cup semi-final against England
  • Kerr, who was making her first start at the tournament, hammered the ball in from a way out
  • The goal drew the co-hosts level, but the Lionesses quickly restored their advantage

Sam Kerr scored an outrageous goal to draw Australia level in their FIFA Women's World Cup semi-final against England on August 16.

Kerr picked the ball up near the halfway line and made a beeline for the Lionesses' goal. With many expecting her to seek out Caitlin Foord, who had made a dash forward, the Matildas' skipper unleashed a shot from way out, which breezed past Mary Earps.

Ella Toone had earlier given Sarina Wiegman's charges the lead in the contest in the 36th minute.

Kerr's moment of magic was, however, quickly drowned out after a defensive mix-up for Australia allowed Lauren Hemp to creep back and restore England's lead.

Hemp was once again the tormentor in chief, as the Manchester City star set up Alessio Russo, who powered in her third goal of the tournament.

Russo's goal vanquished hopes of a let comeback from the yellow and green stars as the Lionesses went on to book their spot in their first-ever World Cup final.

Kerr's goal, despite being on the losing side at the end of it all, reminded everyone of her sheer quality despite missing the first part of the tournament with a calf injury.

What next in the Women's World Cup?

Wiegman will be hoping to go one better on Sunday and win it after losing the 2019 final to the United States of America with her native Dutch team.

Tony Gustavsson ladies will meanwhile retreat and face Sweden in the third-place playoff on Sunday. Sweden once again fell to their semifinal curse as Spain overpowered them on their first attempt.

No country in the history of the Women's World Cup has had many top-four finishes without winning the trophy as Sweden.

Morgan trolls Australians

England are through to the finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup, and Piers Morgan couldn't be happier about it.

Sports Brief reported that British broadcaster Morgan took to X, formerly Twitter, to celebrate the team's historic win.

Sharing a photo of Alessia Russo celebrating the Three Lionesses' third goal and one of Jonny Bairstow during the 2023 Ashes tournament, Morgan said that the win was revenge for the cricket.
