  • Lionel Messi scored a stunner in the League Cup semifinals against Philadelphia Union
  • The Inter Miami captain got the second goal in the 4-1 win to qualify for the finals
  • Fans, however, questioned the quality of defending in the MLS, with Messi seemingly finding it too 'easy'

Lionel Messi left fans speechless after scoring from way out during the Leagues Cup semi-final between Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union on August 15.

Messi was among the goals as Inter Miami breezed through their opponents to 4-1 to set up a final date and qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Tata Martino's side started the rout after just three minutes through Josef Martinez before Messi scored for the sixth game running since moving to the United States.

The Argentine took the ball from a fouled Martinez near the halfway line and, after a few steps forward, unleashed a shot from way out, which caught Andre Blake in the Philadelphia goal napping.

The ball went through the outstretched arms of Blake and found its way to the bottom corner, leaving fans in disbelief. Messi has now scored nine goals in six appearances.

Fans reactions

However, a section of fans online questioned the quality of defending in the Major League Soccer. Going by a sample of comments spotted by Sports Brief, many agreed that the goal seemed too 'easy' even for a player of Messi's standards.

@laligafrauds said:

"How can the keeper not save that?? 30 yards out and the shot had hardly any power. He didn’t even dive for it properly. So rigged"

@OfficialDaddyA2 said;

"Wait, was the keeper eating or something?"

@zaMusbeyne wasn't forgiving either with his/her comments:

"Who is this goalkeeper? Even my 60-year-old grandmother can save this ball."

Jordi Alba got on the scoresheet for the first time since he left Barcelona for Inter Miami's third at the stroke of halftime, with David Ruiz rounding off the win six minutes from time.

Carranza swaps shirts with Messi

Sports Brief has also reported that Julian Carranza is living the dream.

The Philadelphia Union forward gained a precious item on Tuesday night as he swapped shirts with Lionel Messi.

They made the exchange following the Herons’ 4-1 win in the Leagues Cup semifinal.
