Mason Mount's 'woeful' stats during Man United EPL debut leaves fans stunned
FootballWhen Man United were Brutally Told by Club Legend That They Are Not Title Contenders
- Gary Neville had a scathing assessment of Manchester United after the Red Devils’ narrow 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday
- The former United defender refused to call United title contenders after watching the performance on Monday
- Neville also joked United needed to take up the services of Moises Caicedo, who recently signed for Chelsea
Gary Neville has claimed it is unrealistic to refer to Manchester United as title contenders in a brutal assessment on Monday Night Football.
Neville’s sentiments came at the back of United’s narrow 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in a game that could have gone either way at Old Trafford.
Arguably, United were second best, particularly in the second half, and it took only a moment of brilliance for Raphael Varane to break the deadlock, 14 minutes from time.
United were lucky not to have dropped two points after a strong penalty shout from Wolves late on, following Andre Onana’s mistimed challenge on Sasa Kalajdzic, as reported on BBC.
Neville’s take
After the game, Neville, on punditry duty at Sky Sports, gave a brutally honest assessment of the Manchester United team.
“There will be those that say Manchester United should be challenging for the title now,” he started.
“But realistically, looking at where Arsenal are and how they have recruited this summer, and looking how established Manchester City are, I think it would be unrealistic and harsh to say Manchester United should be competing for the title.”
On United’s midfield performance, Neville added on a light note;
"To be honest with you after tonight I want them [#mufc] to go and get Caicedo and Lavia! Go and get them off Chelsea it’ll only be £170m!"
It is rather interesting that United are not considered among the title contenders by Neville, especially because they have spent more than Liverpool and Manchester City in the summer transfer window.
“He’s not a target man”: Jose Mourinho’s past comments on Rashford playing as number 9 resurface
FootballLast season, the Red Devils finished third in the league in Ten Hag’s first season, 14 points adrift of eventual winners City. They also enjoyed silverware success after winning the Carabao Cup.
Onana mocked for shipping 3 goals vs Arsenal
Sports Brief also reported on how Andre Onana was mocked for shipping in three goals against Arsenal on Sunday, September 3.
Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 27th minute. However, United's lead was shortlived as Martin Odegaard found the back of the net to restore parity for Arsenal a minute later.
The tie looked set to end in a 1-1 draw, only for the home side to score two late goals via Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus to condemn the Red Devils to a comprehensive defeat.
Man United's defeat saw fans single out Onana for ridicule, with many hitting out at the Cameroonian's underwhelming start to life in the Premier League.
