  • Mason Greenwood is expected to stay at Manchester United this season despite calls for him to leave
  • The striker previously faced a number of charges which cast a shadow over his future at Old Trafford
  • Despite being cleared of the charges, Greenwood has not played for the Red Devils since January 2022

Amid reports of Mason Greenwood returning to action with the first team, a section of Manchester United fans have protested against the striker.

The Englishman is said to be on the verge of a 'sensational return' to the Red Devils' main squad after an absence of over a year and a half.

Greenwood has not played for Man United since January 2022, when he was suspended after his arrest over a number of charges, including assault.

However, the youngster got a reprieve in February this year, per talkSPORT, after the charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses.

Recently, United - who announced they would initiate a private probe into the issue - inadvertently hinted Greenwood was bound to stay at the club.

This is after the striker was included in United's squad for the new season, per their official website.

However, the decision has seemingly not gone down well with a section of fans, who staged a protest ahead of United's Premier League opener against Wolves on Monday night.

The Sun reports that protestors were clear about their fury at Greenwood's potential return before the encounter, with one female fan holding an expletive-laden poster calling out the club for its apparent spineless attitude.

Meanwhile, the Manchester-based club will seek to improve on their third-place Premier League finish last season, when they embark on a new season under coach, Erik ten Hag.

Greenwood wants to stay at United

Meanwhile, Sports Brief also reported that Greenwood is 'desperate' to rejoin United despite the uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford.

The young striker has not kicked a ball for the club in more than a year and a half after United suspended him, following his arrest in January 2022.

Reports indicate that Greenwood is desperate to remain at Old Trafford as he bids to reignite his football career, with the charges against him dropped.
