  • Kaizer Chiefs went a goal behind against Cape Town City thanks to a Mark van Heerden goal
  • Van Heerden scored from a header which Brandon Peterson appeared to have saved at first
  • The linesman made a crucial call as he allowed City's goal to stand against the Amakhosi

The game between Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City was an action-packed affair, but one moment stood out more than others.

Mark van Heerden opened the scoring for City in the first half, but credit goes to the linesman for awarding the goal.

Van Heerden headed home from close range, but Chiefs keeper Brandon Petersen pushed the ball away before it hit the back of the net.

Before City realised what had happened, the linesman signalled to the referee that the ball had crossed the line, and a goal was awarded.

While Chiefs players were confused by the decision, City celebrated the opening goal. With South African football not having VAR or access to goal-line technology, the linesman’s decision was final.

The goal has caused some debate as even SuperSport’s panel couldn’t decide whether it was a goal or not.

Fans on social media have also voiced their opinion on the goal.

@KopediAphane:

“We need a better angle on that Van Heerden goal.”

@Constitution_94:

“According to some Kaizer Chiefs fans, this ball didn't cross the line...because it was still airborne when Peterson scrambled it out.”

@325C_K:

“I don't dispute the goal but for the linesman to make a call from his position, crazy.”

@mfundo_debrian:

“If that was scored against Sundowns I'm sure the linesman wouldn't have seen it going over the line.”

@DingileS_:

“From this angle it definitely did. You can see it on the other side of the post. Great job linesman.”

The MTN 8 has experienced some controversy already during the opening fixture, especially when it comes to a lack of technology playing a part.

Mamelodi Sundowns were accused of benefiting from close calls after their winning goal stood, despite Themba Zwane appearing to be offside when he received the ball.

Fans believe Sundowns benefit often

Are Mamelodi Sundowns benefitting from dubious decisions?

That’s the view of many fans who believe that the Sundowns are winning games because they are getting the benefit of the doubt in crucial decisions.

The club have been trending on social media after Peter Shalulile’s assist against Kaizer Chiefs in the week and then again after Themba Zwane scored against Moroka Swallows, Sports Brief reported.
