According to Metro UK, the Belgian suffered a hamstring injury during the thrilling EPL clash played at Turf Moor.

It is understood that this was the same injury picked up by the midfielder during the Champions League final against Inter Milan last season.

His withdrawal from the match saw him replaced by Mateo Kovacic, who sealed a summer move to the English champions from Chelsea this summer.

Pep delivers update on De Bruyne

Guardiola has now painted a grim picture of De Bruyne's injury, with the Spaniard revealing his starman will be out for a while.

"Unfortunately he is injured again. He said to me it’s a problem in the same position as the Champions League," The Mirror quoted Pep saying.

"He recovered well but now we’ve lost him for a time, he will be out for a while. We have to reflect and talk to the doctors and the physios. Now he has to be relaxed, recover and come back. He was feeling really good before," he added.

Despite De Bruyne's injury blow, City were still able to see off Burnley, with Erling Haaland scoring a brace to inspire his side to a 3-0 comfortable win.

Pep explains his altercation with Haaland
