FootballEx Chelsea Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy Commits ‘Big’ Mistake on Saudi Pro League Debut, Video
- Edouard Mendy got off to the worst possible start on his competitive debut for Al-Ahli
- The former Chelsea goalkeeper conceded from his own mistake against Al Hazem in the Saudi League opener
- His howler proved inconsequential as Roberto Firmino's hattrick sealed a 3-1 win for Ahli
Edouard Mendy committed an unpardonable blunder on his Saudi Pro League debut for Al-Ahli.
Mendy, who had transferred from Chelsea during the summer window to join the Royals, was selected as the preferred goalkeeper as Ahli commenced a highly-anticipated and promising 2023-24 campaign.
While his team achieved a convincing 3-1 triumph against Al Hazem at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium on Friday evening, the performance of the 31-year-old goalkeeper was less than satisfactory.
The Senegal international was responsible for Hazem's lone goal in the match, as he mistakenly passed the ball to Vina, who capitalized on the opportunity by skillfully lobbing the ball over Mendy, reducing Ahli's two-goal lead, JOE.co.uk reports.

Nonetheless, Mendy's blunder ultimately held little consequence due to the remarkable display of skill by Roberto Firmino, the former Liverpool star, who secured a debut hat-trick.
The recipient of the 2021 FIFA Best Goalkeeper Award will aim to move past his errors, which to a large extent contributed to him losing his No.1 position at Chelsea as the season progresses.
Firmino, Mahrez star on Al-Ahli debut
While Mendy struggled, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez combined in a spectacular manner during their debut in the Saudi Pro League, Sports Brief reported.
Their adaptation was swift as they quickly showcased their prowess by linking up to secure a goal in Al Ahli's inaugural league match against Al Hazem.
Firmino finished the game with a hattrick while Mahrez mustered a hattrick to seal a perfect outing for the pair.
Mendy joins Saudi bandwagon
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Edouard Mendy joined Al-Ahli on Wednesday, June 28, as the Senegal goalkeeper became the third player to leave Chelsea for Saudi Arabia this summer.
