  • EPL and Saudi Arabia teams have dominated the 2023 summer transfer markets
  • Both leagues have spent more than the Spanish La Liga this summer on new players

Javier Tebas has accused the English Premier League and Saudi Pro League teams of ruining the transfer market following their incessant spending this summer.

According to CNBC Sports, clubs from Saudi Arabia have collectively spent $489mil on player transfers this summer, with top stars like Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez and Karim Benzema moving to the Saudi Pro League.

English Premier League clubs have also spent heavily this summer, with the likes of Arsenal spending £200m, while the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham have also spent £165mil and £167m, respectively.

Real Madrid remains La Liga’s biggest spender this summer as the Spanish club has shelled out a whopping €128.50mil on transfers, the majority of which was on Englishman Jude Bellingham.

Tebas against World Cup expansion

Meanwhile, La Liga president Javier Tebas has revealed he is preparing a legal challenge against FIFA's plans to expand its own competitions, Sky Sport reports.

Tebas claims he is collaborating with other global football federations to oppose FIFA's plan to increase the size of the World Cup and Club World Cup.

The World Cup will feature 48 nations starting in 2026, and the Club World Cup will grow from seven to 32 teams starting in 2025 according to Tebas, these changes will badly hurt the financial health of European clubs and put an unsustainable amount of pressure on the football calendar.

Tebas wants UEFA to change

Earlier, Sports Brief reported La Liga president, Javier Tebas, urged UEFA to urgently change the format of the Champions League to resurrect the value of the national leagues across Europe.

The current format sees 32 teams qualify for the competition's group stages, with four teams per group playing in a home and away format for six games.

Tebas has now kicked up against some countries getting multiple slots for the Champions League as he urged the European body to revert to the old model.
