FootballBrandon Petersen’s Embarrassing Error Gifts Sundowns Victory Over Chiefs
- Kaizer Chiefs have only one point from their opening two games of the DStv Premiership season
- Brandon Petersen had a brilliant game for Chiefs until the 90th minute when he committed a howler
- Mamelodi Sundowns secured all three points thanks to an embarrassing error from Petersen
Brandon Petersen has had a moment to forget in the DStv Premiership.
The Kaizer Chiefs 'keeper was responsible for gifting Mamelodi Sundowns a late goal in his side’s game against the defending champions.
Chiefs were trailing 1-0 from the 21st minute of the game when Lucas Costa scored his second goal of the season. Ashley du Preez then grabbed an equaliser in the 84th minute of the encounter to give the Amakhosi a lifeline, The South African reported.
With time running out, it looked like the two sides would share the spoils before Petersen’s costly error.
Sundowns pushed forward in the 90th minute of the game and Neo Maema took a shot which should have been easy for Petersen to catch. Unfortunately, the ball went through his hands and into the back of the net.
With five minutes extra time added on, there wasn’t enough time for Chiefs to grab another equaliser and they had to watch as the Brazilians continued their winning start to the season.
Chiefs have now only picked up one point in their first two games under Molefi Ntseki.
Petersen trends on social media
The keeper’s mistake has also drawn a lot of comments on social media as fans reacted to the howler.
Prior to the mistake, Petersen was having a brilliant game for Chiefs, and kept Masandawana out on many occasions. Sadly, his error has seen many compare him to Banyana Banyana keeper, Kaylin Swart.

“Brandon Petersen doing a Kaylin Swart…it’s a “Ma se kind” thing.”

Football@_izodlalaiTv:
“Gift of the givers. He makes about 4 quality saves in 1v1 situations with the shooter and then he hands the opponent 2 easy goals. Brandon Petersen my boy, I hope he recovers💔”
@SayYankee:
“Swart and Brandon Petersen same WhatsApp group. Kaizer chiefs coach should know that we need Khune.”
Swart's error proves costly
Banyana Banyana’s 2023 Women's World Cup journey has sadly come to an end.
The African champions were eliminated from the tournament after suffering a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in the round of 16.
The second goal was particularly hard to take as it came as the result of an error by Kaylin Swart, Sports Brief reported.
