  • The Premier League is set to kick off for a new season on Friday, August 11
  • With a new season comes another whirlwind for clubs, and there will likely be several managerial sackings
  • Interesting data shows October is the month when managers are most likely to get booted

One of the things that is almost guaranteed in the Premier League is a manager losing his job.

With only hours until the new Premier League season, there are scathing reports that Julen Lopetegui is already in danger of losing his job at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Premier League sackings are not a rare occurrence, especially in modern football. In fact, the 2022/23 campaign set a record of 16 sackings, up from the previous stat of only 10 sackings in a single season.

New managers

This season, there are some new faces in the Premier League including new Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglu, who has no experience in the English top flight.

Another Premier League debutant is AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, whose most recent managerial job was with Rayo Vallecano in Spain, according to Sky Sports.

These managers have a spotlight on them because past stats have shown that new managers in the Premier League are usually under more pressure to deliver than their experienced counterparts.

Number of sackings 2013/14 to 2022/23

Taking things further, data from BBC revealed the months when Premier League managers have received the boot the most in the last decade.

And it comes as no surprise that the last three months of the year (October, November and December), are usually the time when clubs are determined to make changes to their managers.

In the last 10 years, December has seen the most managers sacked with 14 bosses receiving their marching orders.

This is closely followed by October, with 13 managers, then January, which has seen 12 managers sacked in the past decade.

November has had 11 managers sacked, while clubs also tend to sack their bosses in February towards the start of a run of games with no international breaks. February has seen 10 managers sacked over the past decade.

August and May which are the first and last months of the season respectively, have the least number of managerial sackings with only two in the last decade.

Wonderkids to look out for

Sports Brief also reported on the seven wonder kids to look out for ahead of the new Premier League season.

As has happened before, the new season presents a number of young players with a golden chance to announce themselves to the world.

Manchester City’ss Rico Lewis and Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri are among some promising prospects in 2023/24.
