Since suffering an injury in a skiing accident shortly after the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Manuel Neuer’s return to full fitness has been a source of worry for the medics at Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich.

The club had opted for a short-term replacement in Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer.

Having successfully guided the club to a consecutive 11th Bundesliga crown, the club decided to part ways with the Swiss international.

This decision to let go of Sommer may have come too early and at a cost, as first-choice goalkeeper and captain Neuer only recently suffered a relapse in his recovery and has had to undergo another surgery, per reports from German outlet Bild.

Bayern’s options to replace Neuer

Bayern Munich are anticipating that Neuer will remain sidelined until at least 2024. As a result, the candidates on their list of potential replacements are players who could contribute significantly to the club in the long term.

According to reports from football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Bayern have drawn up a shortlist which includes AFC Ajax’s Geronimo Rulli and Sevilla’s goalkeeping hero, Yassine Bounou. The talks about the German club signing former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea are also still floating around.

It remains to be seen which of these options could get over the line ahead of their opening Super Cup fixture against RB Leipzig.

Neuer breaks leg during holiday

Previously, Sports Brief reported that Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have been dealt a massive blow after their goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer reportedly suffered a significant setback in his recovery from injury.
