  • Ifeoma Onumonu has called on Nigeria to provide more resources for the Women's team
  • The Super Falcons' World Cup journey ended with a painful round of 16 exit to England
  • The West African nation has always been on the spot for providing poor facilities to its players

Nigeria Women's star Ifeoma Onumonu has launched a thinly-veiled attack on the country's football resources following their elimination from FIFA Women's World Cup.

The Super Falcons came agonizingly close to reaching the quarterfinals only to lose to England on post-match penalties after a cagey affair at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

The African giants dominated the proceedings, forcing the European champions to extra time and, eventually, penalties but could not use their numerical advantage to pull off a major upset. England, finished the game with 10 players after Lauren James was sent off for a silly challenge on Michelle Alozie, as captured by Eurosport.

Randy Waldrum's side missed their first two penalties, with Chloe Kelly scoring the winning kick to send England through. Despite their gallant performance, Nigeria would certainly feel that they deserved more from the game.

Onumonu's message to Nigeria

Forward Onumonu has called on the country's federation to do better going forward after 'seeing what resources can do.'

"I’ve seen what England have access to. In Nigeria, we don’t have access to much. Our training fields aren’t great. Where we sleep isn’t great. Sometimes we share beds," as quoted by the Guardian.

The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) has always been under sharp criticism for failing to adequately provide for the girls despite their successes. There have been wrangles about the remittance of their allowances, with FIFA stepping in to ensure that the players receive their money.

"There’s a lot that needs to be done. Hopefully, more people start to talk about it. Coming here, it’s hard to adjust. We do what we can because we love playing for our country but hopefully, they make it easier for us to do our best," said the Gotham FC player.

The Super Falcons will now retreat and regroup for next year's Paris Olympics as England await the winner of the game between Colombia and Jamaica.

Nnadozie reacts to England defeat

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Super Falcons goalkeeper and captain, Chiamaka Nnadozie remains positive despite Nigeria's round of 16 FIFA Women's World Cup elimination.

Nigeria were booted out of the competition after a penalty shootout defeat to the European champions on Monday morning in Brisbane.

Nnadozie, who had kept three clean sheets at the tournament, admitted to her team's disappointment of not progressing to the quarter-final.
