Exclusive: Sergio Dos Santos Says Kaizer Chiefs Must Frustrate Simba SC
- Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Sergio Dos Santos has urged South Africans to ensure they retain the ball against Simba SC
- Dos Santos says because Chiefs are not desperate for goals, there’s no need to rush forward; however they must keep the ball and frustrate Simba
- The Cape Town-based manager also says he would not bring back goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune but he would go for Daniel Akpeyi’s experience
Kaizer Chiefs have to retain the ball in Tanzania against Simba SC, according to former coach Sergio Dos Santos.
Speaking exclusively to Briefly News, the Cape Town-based legend also looked at why coach Gavin Hunt must not use veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune between the goalposts.
Amakhosi have left Mzansi to face the Tanzanian outfit as they enjoy a healthy 4-0 heading to their CAF Champions League second-leg quarter-final match on Saturday afternoon.
Dos Santos says the DStv Premiership giants cannot rush to get goals in the clash set to be staged at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium but to frustrate their hosts. Dos Santos told Briefly News:
“Chiefs have got to make sure they keep possession as much as possible. That will help them because you are playing away from home. You have four goals and that is a comfortable lead but if they (Simba) score three quick goals, then you will never know what can happen.
“Chiefs have been under a lot of pressure, they have been striving a little bit. So, they have got a fantastic lead now. They only have to make sure they don’t lose it and the best way to do that is to keep the ball, ensure that you spend much time on the opposition’s half.
“That’s the most important thing and then I think they should be okay.”

On the best tactical approach for the Soweto giants heading to East Africa, Dos Santos believes Hunt’s troops must not rush to get a goal.
“You know they are not desperate for the goal but the other team has to score - Chiefs is fine. So, they can absorb the pressure and when the opposition sends too many players forward, then Chiefs can try and use those spaces.
“Chiefs must be calm on the ball and they only need to frustrate the opponent by keeping possession.”
On whether Khune must come back to replace Bruce Bvuma or Daniel Akpeyi, the legend said the two glovemen have been consistent when the Bafana Bafana keeper was not available.
“No, I would not bring Khune for this one. I think Bvuma and Akpeyi have been doing well for Chiefs in the absence of Khune.

“I think the two of them have been consistent and I would not change it. It’s one of those two and Akpeyi is the one who has the most experience of that level of football. So, my choice should be Akpeyi.”
Meanwhile, Briefly News reported that Chiefs have confirmed the presence of Sao Tome player, Jardel Nazare, in their camp as they look to bolster their ranks.
Amakhosi are still barred from signing players as per the ruling by FIFA but they are now preparing to bring in new faces.
Coach Hunt is already planning for life beyond this season and having a player such as Nazare means they will go all-out in the transfer market.
