Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was the headline-maker on Sunday, August 6 as he assisted after a horrific mistake to help his side secure a draw against Athletic Bilbao.
United were up against the Spaniards in their final pre-season game, barely 24 hours after playing RC Lens.
Erik Ten Hag inevitably made wholesome changes to his squad, as Jadon Sancho played as a number 9, while Maguire was at the heart of defence.
It didn’t take long before the Premier League’s most expensive defender to grab headlines as his attempted pass in his team’s half was intercepted and Bilbao broke forward for Nico Williams to find the opener, as reported on Sky Sports.
United pushed for an equalizer and it eventually came late in the game as youngster Pacundo Pellistri struck a beauty from inside the box after a headed laydown from Maguire.
It was quite interesting to see the defender move further up field, as he threw caution to the win to try help his side get an equalizer, and his risk eventually paid off.
United officially end their pre-season with three defeats, a draw and two wins, which is a fairly lukewarm result from what Erik Ten Hag would have expected.
They will however have to look forward as they come up against Wolverhampton Wanderers in their first league game of the campaign on August 14.
Mason Mount misses sitter
Sports Brief also reported on how Mason Mount missed an absolute sitter on Saturday against RC Lens.
After some intricate passing, United youngster Alejandro Garnacho found himself through on goal, but the angle was a bit tight and he decided to square the ball to Mount, who had also made the run forward.
Mount was expected to tap the ball in, with the goalkeeper in no man’s land, but the former Chelsea ace somehow fluffed his angles and completely missed the shot, scuffing his effort to allow RC Lens to break out.
