- The Netherlands were gifted their second goal when Kaylin Swart misjudged her shot
- The Banyana goalkeeper attracted support and criticism on social media after her error
Banyana Banyana’s 2023 Women's World Cup journey has sadly come to an end.
The African champions were eliminated from the tournament after suffering a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in the round of 16.
Trailing 1-0 as the game went into the second half, the South Africans always looked like they could fight their way back into the game, especially with Thembi Kgatlana posing a threat up front.
Sadly, their chances took a huge dent in the 68th minute of the game when Lineth Beerensteyn got onto the scoresheet for the Dutch.
While the striker was credited with having scored the goal, Banyana keeper, Kaylin Swart, unfortunately gifted her opponents the second.
The goalie attempted to catch Beerensteyn’s effort but the ball went through her hands and into the back of the net.
SA reacts to Swart's error
The keeper was visually distraught after conceding the goal, especially considering her performance during the rest of the game.
Swart pulled off some great saves against the Dutch and even tried to get some quick releases out to Kgatlana, but the mistake is what many will remember.
After a stellar performance against Italy in their final group game, fans on social media believe the keeper should not be criticised for the one mistake, but others were less forgiving.
