- Kahn once scored a goal seemingly inspired by the legend Diego Maradona
Oliver Kahn remains one of the most passionate goalkeepers the world of football ever witnessed.
Kahn’s heroics and theatrics saw him earn the Bundesliga 'goalkeeper of the year' award a record seven times and an unprecedented FIFA World Cup golden ball in the 2002 edition of the tournament.
Amidst the truckload of stellar performances consistently produced by Kahn through his 21-year career, it was his Diego Maradona-esque performance that has recently made the headlines in Germany, thanks to the Bundesliga's official Facebook page.
When Kahn scored 'Maradona' goal
Argentine World Cup winner, Diego Maradona, will live in the hearts of many for a number of reasons including his quarter-final heroics against England at the Azteca in Mexico, 1986.
Before scoring one of the goals of the century, Maradona pipped England’s goalkeeper, Peter Shilton, with his hands. This was famously dubbed the 'hand of God' goal.
Kahn looked to have recreated this act in Bayern Munich’s 3-2 defeat against Hansa Rostock in the 2000/01 Bundesliga season, with the team heading towards its close when the Bavarians won a corner.
Traditionally, it is expected of goalkeepers to join in on the attack at the late stage of a game with the hope of scoring the equaliser in the works.
The corner kick went straight to Kahn, who scored the equaliser - with his hands - to earn himself a red card and also see the goal attempt disallowed.
Speaking after the game, the legendary keeper refused to accept criticism for his actions and jokingly told Bild:
“It was merely a reflex which is there in all goalkeepers.”
That season, despite losing against Rostock, Bayern won the Bundesliga title, finishing a single point above FC Schalke in second place.
