FootballDembele: Barcelona Captain Expresses Disappointment With Forward’s Transfer Decision
- Ousmane Dembele recently agreed to a move to join French club PSG
- Barcelona’s effort to talk the forward out of the move to PSG proved fruitless
- The Catalan club captain has made his feelings clear about Dembele’s transfer
Talks surrounding Ousmane Dembele’s immediate future have dominated the headlines lately.
The forward was entering the final year of his current contract at Barcelona and was reported to be a target for French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Amidst the cloud of uncertainty and rumours surrounding the forward’s future, reports from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming a verbal agreement between Dembele and PSG took many by surprise.
Mixed reactions have trailed this transfer choice by the French forward given it was only two summers ago that many wanted him out by all means of the Catalan club.
Three years ago, Barcelona head coach, Xavi Hernandez appeared to be the only one backing the 24-year-old. Fast forward to the summer of 2023 and the forward appears to want out of the Spanish club.
A few Barcelona players, including club captain, Sergi Roberto, have not held back their feelings about the rapid developments surrounding Dembele’s transfer and have come out to make themselves heard.
Sergi Roberto on Dembele’s transfer
The new Barcelona captain had previously expressed his desire for Dembele to continue at Barcelona, and spoke to the media after the club’s 1-0 triumph against Italian giants AC Milan.
As quoted by Barcelona Universal, Roberto said:
"We're all a little disappointed with Dembele. When you love someone, and you want them to be with you, it feels bad if they choose another option.
"After all, this is a job, and he decides what's best for him and his family."
While skepticism surrounds the reason for Dembele’s sudden decision to join PSG, Mundo Deportivo reports that the French star told Xavi that he is joining PSG for their sporting project, and not for money.
