Former Real Madrid defender, Marcelo Vieira, was overcome by emotions as he unintentionally caused a devastating injury to an opponent.

The incident occurred during his current club, Fluminese's Copa Libertadores playoff match against Argentinos Juniors on August 1.

During a clash with Marcelo, Luciano Sanchez suffered a serious leg injury, leaving the 29-year-old in immense pain, MARCA reports.

Initially, both teams feared the defender's leg was broken, but the club's medical report later confirmed it to be a full dislocation.

A heart-wrenching scene unfolded as Marcelo was eventually shown a red card, tearfully leaving the pitch, while the Argentinian player's screams filled the air, according to GOAL.

The unfortunate event took place in the 56th minute of the match, which ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.

Reports from local media indicate that Sanchez's recovery time is estimated to be between eight and 12 months due to the severity of the injury.

Fans on social media noted that Marcelo remained a gentleman on and off the pitch, with the incident certain to give him sleepless nights.

Marcelo destroys opponent with nutmeg

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the 35-year-old showcased his exceptional skills on the field during a clash between Fluminense and Flamengo.

Supporters went wild as Marcelo nutmegged one of his markers, skillfully evading the defence pressure during the Flu-Fla Derby, Sports Brief reported.

Unfortunately, his remarkable display of skill was met with a brutal hacking-down by Luiz Araujo, resulting in a red card for the ex-Atlanta United player.

Marcelo wins silverware at Fluminese

Previously, Sports Brief reported on Real Madrid legend, Marcelo scoring a screamer for Fluminese in the final of the Campeonato Carioca.

He lifted the roof with a sensational strike from outside the box at the half-hour mark, resulting in his first piece of silverware with his club.
